Tai Chi is a Chinese ancient martial art based on Qigong and “internal” or soft style. There are several styles of Tai Chi. The Yang style postures are wide and comfortable. In Yang style Tai Chi, the structure is not strict and demanding, the body is upright, and the movements are smooth, light, agile and rooted. Yang style 24 Form was created in China in 1956. It is a simplified form that contains all the essential principles of the 108 Form. This shorter form reduces the time required to learn the exercise. It is a nice introductory Form.

David Suzuki, iconic Canadian scientist, educator, broadcaster and activist delivers a 'last lecture' -- what he describes as "a distillation of my life and thoughts, my legacy, what I want to say before I die".

The film interweaves the lecture with scenes from the places and events in Suzuki's life. As such, the film is a biography of ideas -- forged by the major social, scientific, cultural and political events of the past 70 years.

Vancouver Island roots music supergroup Three Worlds - comprised of award-winning guitarist Brad Prevedoros, acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Greg Joy, and percussion master Niel Golden will be performing a concert at the Mayne Island Community Centre on Saturday January 14 at 7:30 pm to celebrate their new CD release.

The concert will feature the trio’s own interpretive blend of eastern, Latin jazz, blues, African, pan-Asian, and Celtic folk influences. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Trading Post or Tree Frog Gallery.

MI Music Society presents May Moore - Sat Nov 5

Mae Moore’s Folklore is anything but straightforward folk music. In a way that’s reminiscent of Bruce Cockburn, Moore draws on many musical traditions, but fuses them so carefully as to make their origins indistinguishable. The result is so organic that to even speak of origins seems counterproductive. Moore has perfected an orchestral-jazz-soul-folk synthesis that floats effortlessly. Moore’s voice is unadorned and ethereal – somewhere between Norah Jones and Neko Case.

MI Chamber Fall Dance - Sat Oct 15th

The Mayne Island Community Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Fall Dance at the Mayne Island Resort at Bennett Bay on Saturday, October 15th, 2011.

The band playing is the Wharf Street Band from Victoria. They are a well known and popular dance band and work regularly in the Greater Victoria and South Island area. Their music covers rock, blues, Motown and funk.

The Mayne Island Early Childhood Society is challenging any and all groups or individuals to join in the fun at our Chili Cook Off.

Any group is welcome - book clubs, boaters, firefighters, restaurants, businesses, knitters, artists, anyone!

This will be a fun evening, and we would appreciate your support. See you there!

Please join us on November 4th, 6:00 at the Mayne Island School gym. It’s a western theme, so come appropriately attired.

There are three categories -- chili, cornbread or dessert.

Rules
• Each team or individual will be encouraged to have an entry in the food fashion show.
• Winner of the fashion show will be determined by an Applause-A-Meter.
• Teams will be limited to 1 to 4 members
• Voting will be conducted by the members of the community who pay $10.00 to come in, judge and eat.
Each team will have a container in front of their entry for contributions, and MIECS will be selling
$10.00 rolls of quarters at the door. The team with the most money in front of them at the end of the night is the winner! If you happen to end up with some $20.00 bills in your container, well that’s fine too!
• For chili, each team will need to provide sixty 1/2 cup portions. For cornbread and desserts, sixty 1”x1” squares.
• Each team provides all fixin’s for the chili, or cornbread or dessert.
• Teams to provide ladles and serving utensils. MIECS will provide tables, dishes, sample containers, cutlery, napkins and glasses.
• There will be trophies for the winning teams, with great public acclaim as the biggest prize of all.

In terms of members, the Silver Maynes is the largest service organization on Mayne Island. It provides excursions for members, and seeks to provide services to promote the interests and physical well-being of seniors. Our annual Christmas turkey dinner is a major event every December.

Will Millar & Chuck McCandless are returning to Mayne Island to help raise funds for Mayne Island Youth Fitness.

Last year's show was a sell-out and a roaring success. This year they will also be joined by Irish performer Mary Murphy and guitarist Paul Kiem. This is Mayne Island Youth Fitness' main fundraiser for the year.

The Show is at the Mayne Island Community Centre.

Doors open at 6:30. Show starts just after 7pm.

Forty five paintings. It feels as though Mike and I live in an art studio.

New canvases, too big to drag downstairs into the work area, simply stay propped against a wall in the dining room. Nearly completed work, still wet, end up in the livingroom where they can be assessed in a different light.

Once in a while there is a "mini disaster" in combining work and personal space. The dog's tail, for example, is covered in green paint and I've just figured out he wagged some trees off a canvas. It's all fixable and almost finished.

I'm looking forward to showing the work.

The enigmatically named acoustic/vocal trio, UHF, are Shari Ulrich, Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes, as brilliant a teaming of three disparate talents as a Canadian West Coast accident could ever be.

When they first joined forces in 1989 for what was planned as a one off performance at Vancouver’s Winter Roots Festival, Vancouver born Henderson was best known as the long time lead singer and songwriter for the successful Collectors and Chilliwack bands. Ulrich, an ex-Californian, had been a key member of British Columbia's Pied Pumpkin, The Hometown Band and a respected solo singer/songwriter while Forbes, from Dawson Creek and known for years as Bim, was a long time formidable staple on the North American folk/roots circuit.

Ulrich, Henderson and Forbes are all seasoned and prolific songwriters - indeed, each continues a solo recording and performance career - but it took a special focus to come up with tunes that suited the trio and led to the critical success of two albums; UHF and UHF II.

The trio will bring the outdoor stage to life at the Ag Hall on Saturday, July 23th. Tickets are on sale at Happy Tides and Home Hardware. Don’t miss this one!

Oliver Needs A New Home

Oliver has lived with me for 2 ½ years and he is a lovely companion. But my life has changed and I am looking at making a change in where I live and “no pets” seems to be the criteria for a move.

Oliver is a mixed breed terrier, approximately 30 lbs, about 10 years old, very healthy, he’s just been checked by Elizabeth and is up to date with shots, has had his teeth cleaned.

He’s very easy to live with, very quiet and accommodating to travel or staying home. He gets along with cats, is very gentle with children and likes other dogs once he gets to know them (he would probably enjoy living with another dog).

He would be a great companion for an older person who wants a pet for company, all he wants in life is his owner to be sitting down so he can lay next to them. He doesn’t require a lot of exercise but is capable to long hikes, he’s a quiet sleeper and doesn’t get up on the furniture or shed.

He’s a lovely little dog and I will miss him but I need to be able to respond to all offers to move.

Willow Weaving Workshop, June 4 & 5

Alastair Heseltine, a master weaver and artist from Hornby Island, will be coming to Mayne Island to offer an introductory willow basketry course. Participants will learn to weave a round basket in a traditional mediterranean style over the course of the two-day workshop.

The event will run from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday June 4 & 5. All working materials will be provided, but participants are asked to bring a pair of pruners, a pillow and a packed lunch for each day.

Cost for the workshop will be $180. Prepayment will be prefered to hold a spot as space will be limited to ten participants.

May Day Dance - May 21

The Mayne Island Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a May Day Dance at the Mayne Island Community Centre on Saturday, May 21, 2011.

The band playing is the Wharf Sreet Band from Victoria. They are a well known and popular dance band and work regularly in the Greater Victoria and South Island area. Their music covers rock, blues, Motown and funk.

Mayne Island Music Society - Tim Hus - May 14th

Tim Hus considers himself first and foremost a cowboy singer. Recently nominated ""Roots Artist of the Year"" for the 2011 Canadian Music Awards, Tim’s music covers roots, folk, rural redneck and blue collar. “The songs I sing are mainly about miners, loggers, farmers, railroaders, ranchers, cowboys, oil riggers, truck drivers, fishermen, gunfighters, bootleggers, brawlers, gamblers, drinkers, and low down two-bit sons-of-guns”. Whatever the topic, Tim’s “Canadiana Cowboy” music inspires foot-stomping standing ovations as he travels from coast to coast.

Tim recently released his fifth CD and has been touring throughout Canada, the USA, and Europe - performing 200 concerts in 2010. He spent the last two summers opening concerts and backing up Canadian icon Stompin' Tom Connors.

MayneNews is asking you to tell your neighbours your stories of how to came to live here on beautiful Mayne Island. I'm sure there are some great stories out there. Mine's not terribly exciting, but I'll go first to get things started. You can see it below this post. (Or here if you're viewing just this single post)

Karaoke Fun Night - GREASE 50s-style - Apr 30

It's back. And it's back in time as Saturday night brings us 50s-style Grease themed Karaoke Fun Night at the Ag Hall. Come dressed as your favorite 50s or Grease musical character!

We now have over 4000 entries in our catalogued Karaoke library, so there will be something for everyone to try out.

If you're not a singer, but just need a night out, come for the entertainment value..we also have board games and you can bring your own.

We'll also be celebrating the 12th birthday of one of our Karaoke Regulars, Pink Lady: Jazzy C. and I hear there will be birthday cake!

In keeping with the 50s theme, we'll be selling ice cream floats for $2 each.

Doors open at 6:30 and the we'll close down at 10ish.

Entrance fee: $1 minimum donation per person.

This is an all-ages event and we welcome everyone. Come sing, Dance and have a blast with your friends and family.

Clean ups start at 10:30 and end at 12:00; the Depot will be ready to take in all the debris by 11:30 and will stay open until 1:00 pm. Last year we covered 14 beaches and hope to do as well or better this year.

He will offer an historical perspective about what long time divers are saying about what they see below the surface. Doug is an aquatic ecologist with BC Parks and a lifelong SCUBA diver. He is a passionate conservationist and spends as much free time as possible with his wife Bev collecting fish observations.

Join CRD Director Ken Hancock at the Ag Hall on Sunday, April 17, for a round-table community discussion on the role of the Capital Regional District in the governance of Mayne Island. Potential points of discussion might be:

1. How can we better coordinate activity and services between CRD and MIID?
2. How does the CRD work with the Islands Trust?
3. What is CRD's policy regarding advocacy positions?
4. What is the CRD's role/position on sustainability?

Time permitting, additional topics may be introduced.

Presented by David Cunnington. David is the Ecological Gifts Program Coordinator at Environment Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service. He has worked to protect endangered and threatened wildlife for the past 10 years. Before he became involved in species at risk, he conducted surveys of bats, amphibians and reptiles in the South Okanagan, researched control of introduced tree snakes on the island of Guam, and investigated the effects of fish stocking on amphibian populations.

Help with picture of ship run aground

A request from Saturna resident Andrée Fredette.

Hi. My name is Andrée Fredette, I live on Saturna and I have been interested in the ships that anchor in Plumper Sound and Navy Channel for a few years now. I have taken countless pictures of the gypsum unloaders.

I would like to request info about the Hebei Lion, specifically whether anyone on Mayne Island had actually got a picture of that ship while it was aground off Mayne Island in 2009.

Did anyone from Mayne Island get a snap of that event?

There is an effort to get as much "evidence" of this type of incident, to exert pressure and have the ships anchor closer to the actual port of Vancouver.

Yoga at the Community Centre

Beginners: This class is suitable for those with little or no previous yoga experience. Emphasis is on foundation and structural aspects of asanas (postures) with an introduction to pranayama (breath control).

Pre-registration is required. 10 week session begins Tues March 8th - May 10th, 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm. Cost $70:00.

Gentle: This early morning class is suitable for those with previous experience who are seeking a gentle approach to practice.

7 week session begins Fri Mar 25th - May 6th, 7:30 am -8:45 am. Pre-registration is required. Cost $48:00.

Level One: This on-going, level one class combines dhyana (meditation), pranayama (breath control) and asana (postures) as a guide to deepen self awareness, enabling peace to be more present in our lives. Thursdays 5:30 pm – 6:55 pm.

10 sessions $70:00 or $8:00 drop in fee.

Instructor: Jesse Nordwell

Jesse started his dance training in Japan at the late age of 16 and has been dancing for over 10 years specifically training in Hip Hop, Locking, House, and other Street Styles. Within a year of starting, he placed 3rd in a competition in Japan with a crew and a few months later, placed 2nd at another competition, this time with his own choreography.

He has continued his dance training after moving to Canada in 2001 where he added Jazz to his repertoire. In 2005 he won two awards at Dance Works Festival for a Jazz solo and for Locking choreography.

In 2007 he decided to add Salsa under his belt auditioning, and being accepted for the International Touring Team for Salsa Caliente. Jesse toured and performed with them at the Puerto Rico Salsa Congress in summer of 2008.

Jesse has performed at club events in Vancouver, has made multiple appearances at Bounce Dance Cabaret in Victoria B.C., and in 2009 auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

He is currently in the process of forming a crew and plans on taking the crew across Canada.

Mayne Island deer forum - Feb 25

In attendance: Representatives from BC Ministry of Environment. This meeting is to further explore the Fallow and Black Tail deer over population and to establish a committee to work with the Ministry to develop a workable set of regulations for Mayne to reduce the herd size.

The previous forum outlined the serious effects the deer are having on our sensitive ecosystem and the need to reduce numbers before the damage is irreversible.

Plants & Mammals & Birds … Oh My!

Invasive species such as Himalayan blackberry, fallow deer, and non-migratory Canada geese have had devastating effects on the unique ecosystems of this region. Since 2003 Parks Canada has been restoring natural areas on several of the islands within Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. Eight years later Parks Canada is closer to achieving the restoration goals for these islands by removing key threats so that native plants and animals can thrive with minimum human intervention.

So what does the future hold for the islands we know and love? Join Nicole Kroeker, ecosystem scientist, for a discussion on the interactions between native and introduced invasive species found on Anniversary Island, Eagle Island, and other islets in the park. Find out about the work being done in your backyard to help restore these unique areas. Light refreshments provided.

MIALS is proposing the creation of a Hospice Volunteer Training program to fill the need in our community for ongoing support to Island members with life threatening illnesses.

We are holding a meeting on Wednesday, February 23 at 7:00pm at the Health Centre to discuss the possibility of creating a volunteer hospice training program.

In order for us to create a program for our Island that meets the needs of our community and reflects the services that we can ethically, safely and effectively perform, we need the assistance and collaboration of the many skilled professionals in our community: Medical/Emergency Professionals: Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, Community Nurse, Home Support Workers, Mayne Island Volunteer Fire Fighter’s Association, and the Ambulance Service.

MICS Workshop: Softshores for Shoreline Care - Feb 19

Nikki Wright, Seagrass Conservation Working Group, will illustrate important coastal processes that shape the BC coastline and how we can preserve shorelines as properties undergo development. All content is drawn from Green Shores.

12:30 - 1:30 pm: Mapping the BC Coastline for Sensitivity to Sea Level Rise. Doug Biffard, Provincial Ministry of Environment, will talk about identifying places along the coast that are most at risk to sea level rise. BC Parks has developed a shoreline sensitivity rating to identify where adaptation actions are required.

Native Pollinating Bees and Protecting their Habitats

Gord Hutchings worked as a field biologist for the B.C. Conservation Data Centre, the Royal BC Museum, the Canadian Wildlife Service and the Yukon Territory Gov't doing field entomology collecting. His research at UVic was on the orchard mason bees and he now volunteers with several groups on Vancouver Island and holds public awareness sessions about native bee pollinators, dragonflies and other insects. Community Center Basic Photography Course - starts Feb 10

A Mayne Island Community Centre event: How to Turn Snapshots into Photographs

Angela Pike has asked Toby Snelgrove to offer a basic photography course at the Community Centre.

Starting Feb. 10 for 5 successive weeks Toby will offer successive workshops from 3-5 pm on Thursdays covering five different topics (see the course outline for details).

The course cost is $60 plus $5 of you are not a Community Centre member.

The course is open to anyone but will ensure all understand the basic functions of camera and key elements of a great photo.
