Summer Reading Club at the Library: Starts Jun 28

The Mayne Island Library invites children ages 5 to 12 to participate in the 2019 BC Kids’ Summer Reading Club: Imagine the Possibilities. The SRC runs from June 28th until August 23rd.

Children receive a Reading Record, bookmark, and postcard when they register. Every time they visit the Library over the summer they can pick up a sticker for each week they spend time reading. At the end of the summer, participants will receive a Reading Club medal.

Children are encouraged to set their own reading goals. We recommend a goal of 15 minutes/day. They can read anything they like: Library books, their own books, magazines. If parents are reading with them, that counts too.

Regular reading throughout the summer helps kids maintain and improve their reading skills. Everyone is welcome to attend Library story time sessions on Fridays at 10 am at the Library, There will also be a fun Craft Day on Thursday, August 8th from 1 - 4 pm.

For further information please contact Judi Walker judilu@live.ca.

St. Mary Magdalene Church Fair: Sat Jul 13

St Mary Magdalene Parish will once again be hosting their Church Fair this summer. Mark your calendars, it will take place on July 13, opening at 10 am and closing at 2 pm.

There will be lots of fun for the whole family. You can search through the Treasures from the Attic for that very special item that you can't live without; bid on Silent Auction items or part with some cash at the bottle roulette stand.

Don't miss the Bake Sale and sale of our special, already prepared, meat pies, frozen and ready for your
freezer.

Children's games will have several new additions this year, with field games and piƱatas thrown in. For the younger children there will be a fish pond, face painting and a chance to pet Susie and Cisco, our favourite little horse and donkey.

Bring your calculators and guess the height of a bottle or how many candies in a jar. Guys, this is your chance to beat the odds at playing horseshoes. The Lions Club will be there with their Bun Wagon, cooking up hamburgers and hotdogs. The Church House Cafe will host A Ploughman's Lunch with beverages and a great dessert.

Don't miss this Mayne Island tradition. The Fair co-ordinator is Pat Gasston. For further information please contact Jeannine Merinuk, jedmerinuk@hotmail.com.

New Mayne Island Choir Shares The Stage: Sun Jun 9

Our community choir welcomes the Vivaldi Chamber Choir to St. Mary Magdalene at 3 pm on Sunday June 9th for a concert of songs about our rivers, lakes and seas, almost all from Canadian composers & arrangers.

Some of this music was presented at Vivaldi's Spring show last March. Quite coincidentally our Mayne Island choir has been working on sea shanties and songs about water as well - so getting together comes naturally.

Speaking of the March concert an anonymous admirer wrote "You sang so beautifully! And with such gusto and good humour. I hope you will take this performance to others. St Helen’s is gorgeous, but not exactly approachable. The wider world would so love to hear you, and this particular programme.” So, here they are.

Tickets are $20 at the door or in advance at the Trading Post, Farm Gate and Home Hardware. For further information please contact Alan Ryder (250) 539-2673.
