Waterbird surveyor needed for Horton Bay

Do you know and enjoy our waterbirds? Do you live near Horton Bay? Would you like to put your enjoyment and knowledge to work there? Then please consider volunteering to serve as a BC coastal waterbird surveyor for Horton Bay.

The BC Coastal Waterbird Survey is run by Bird Studies Canada. A number of Mayne Islanders already participate as surveyors for other sites on the island. Horton Bay has two survey sites: from the government dock and from Spud (Potato) Point.

The “job” involves visiting the Horton Bay sites within 2 hours of the daytime high tide on the second Sunday of each month — from September through April — and counting all the waterbirds you see. You enter your counts online. There’s no paperwork!

Good binoculars are essential; a spotting scope is great, too. And Bird Studies Canada provides lots of helpful information and resources for bird identification.

If this appeals to you, please contact Herbie (rochet@shaw.ca or (778) 977-7278) to find out more.

Internet Safety and Avoiding Scams: Wed Apr 17

John Glover is providing a Mayne Island Lions service to the community by presenting a well-prepared program on the topic of Internet Safety.

John is a hands-on senior certified management consultant and one branch of his profession deals with internet security. Lions members found his interesting and valuable talk unnerving and appreciated the responses to many questions that followed regarding what can be done to protect ourselves from scammers. John is offering this opportunity to Mayne Islanders at 7:30 Wed April 17th at the Ag Hall.

Along with spam, scams, and identity theft, he will discuss many other ways that our resources can be quickly removed from our control. Annual Mayne Island Beach Clean-up: Sun Apr 7

Each year about 100 volunteers spend a couple of hours picking up refuse from one of the ten beaches on island. With our stronger than normal storms this winter, we expect a lot of debris will wash up on our shores this year. Please join us for our annual Beach Cleanup on April 7th at 1 pm.

During the last several years we have averaged about 3,000 pounds or more of debris that has been cleared from our beaches and sent to the landfill. This is a great way to meet some of your neighbours, take a pleasant walk, and leave the beaches clean for the enjoyment of the locals and visitors to our lovely island. If you wish to join in this great activity contact a Beach Captain or just show up on the day.
