Fall Native Plant Sale: Sat Oct 13

On Saturday October 13th from 10 am to 1 pm at the Agricultural Hall Grounds, the Mayne Island Conservancy will be holding the Fall Native Plant Sale. Come down and see our excellent selection of native plants, all of which have been grown on-island from locally collected seeds or cuttings.

Experienced staff and volunteers will be available to help you choose the right plant for the right place. Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs so that they can establish roots before the summer drought.

If you hold current membership with the Mayne Island Conservancy, you are invited to pre-order plants for pickup on the date of the sale. Sales will be on a first come first serve basis, as stock of some of our species it limited.

Check out our availability and pricing on our website: mayneconservancy.ca/event/fall-native-plant-sale-2018. For further information please contact Rob Underhill biologist@mayneconservancy.ca.

Dave, a birder for over 50 years, fell in love with vultures at age 65 when he stumbled upon a small Turkey Vulture chick peeking out of its nest cave. New Mayne Island Choir First Rehearsal: Wed Sep 19

Singing enthusiasts are getting together on Wednesday 19th to inaugurate a new choir on Mayne Island at the Community Centre, beginning at 7:30. Everyone is welcome - all voices, all abilities (no auditions!) There will be a short discussion about the start time of future rehearsals, and other items of a business nature after which Leah Jones our conductor, new to the island on that very day, will be introduced.

After careful vocal warm up routines we'll run through music selected from repertoire familiar to members of last year's M.I. Singers, the Community Choir or both! Leah will likely bring something new for us to work on. We will learn part by part as we go and practice files will be available before our second rehearsal.

Singing is good for your health, both mental & physical - and singing in a group is even better! For further information please contact Alan Ryder (250) 539-2673.

Tai Chi is a Chinese ancient martial art based on Qigong an “internal” or soft style. There are several styles of Tai Chi. The Yang style postures are wide and comfortable. Yang style is more suitable for common people with no martial art training. In Yang style Tai Chi, the structure is not strict and demanding, the body is upright, and the movements are smooth, light, agile and rooted. Yang style 24 Form was created in China in 1956. It is a simplified form that contains all the essential principles of the 108 Form. This shortened form reduces the time required to learn the exercise. It is a nice introductory form.
