Nancy Turner - Native Plants: Fri Sep 7


Join us for an engaging talk by distinguished Ethnobotanist and author Nancy Turner on the uses of native plants. Friday September 7th, 8 pm at the Agricultural Hall. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10, available at the Farm Gate Store or Mayne Island Home Building Centre.

Nancy Turner is an Emeritus Professor with the University of Victoria’s School of Environmental Studies. She has worked with First Nations elders and cultural specialists for more than 40 years on topics related to traditional knowledge, resource, and land management systems, especially within northwestern North America.

Her research combines botany and ecology with anthropology, geography and linguistics. She has written more than 20 books and more than 125 book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, as well as numerous other popular and academic publications. She has received both the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia.

Mayne Island Cribbage Club: Tuesday nights


Are you looking for an entertaining evening out during the winter? Come and meet new people at the Ag Hall Tuesday nights from 7 pm to 9:30-ish. We play 6 games each evening with 4 players per table revolving per game. No experience is necessary.

The Club provides coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Bring your own mug and 1 sandwich or 4 cookies or 4 squares to share at the end of the night.

We will be starting up on Tuesday September 4. Registration is $10 per year with a $3 charge per night.

Painters Six Art Show: Aug 24 -26

"Stowaway" Book Launch 2 pm Today


Sunday, August 19, 2 to 3:30 pm at the Mayne Island Library, Mayne Island author Pam Withers launches her 18th young adult novel Stowaway. Come for homemade cookies, readings, and autographed books.

Inspired by Horton Bay, Mayne Island (which the novel identifies as Horton Island), Stowaway puts an adventurous twist on the topic of people smuggling. Owen, a bored Canadian teen, decides to stowaway for fun, only to find 6 Guatemalan teens whose parents have paid to have them smuggled into Canada. To survive, the characters must redefine trust, friendship and family.

"Feeling In Public" Poetry Open Mic: Mon Aug 13


Located at Don Eadie's house - 625 Fernhill Road. (Look for the yellow flower indicating his driveway! - It's a bit steep if you have difficulty walking.) This event will be collecting donations for the MIECS efforts to open a Daycare on Mayne Island.

6:15 pm Poetry Readings Begin (Open Mic: we probably won’t use a microphone.)
7 pm We take a break & discuss the poetry read
7:30 pm Continue Reading Poetry/ Potential Feature Poet

Read your own prose, read a piece from your favourite poet, or just enjoy the words and emotions tumbling from those who have chosen to share. You don't need to have anything memorized, you don't need to confine yourself to a particular style of spoken word (this is not a slam poetry competition).

Book Launch at the Library: Sun Aug 26


Join Governor-General Award-winning author Sarah Ellis at the Mayne Island Library for the launch of her latest Ben book, Ben and the Scaredy-Dog, on Sunday, August 26th at 2 pm.

The dog in the book was inspired by Mayne Island's own SallyDog (Judi and Libbie's gentle black lab). If she is brave enough Sally may join us out on the patio.

There will be copies of the book available for sale and the author will sign them. Sally might too. Refreshments and dog biscuits will be served. The event is free and everyone is welcome.
