Heroes: A Play from Pender Island

Pender Island Solstice Theatre presents Heroes at the Ag Hall on April 8, 2017. Tickets at door $15. Show starts at 8 pm.

Heroes is French play written by GĂ©rald Sibleyras entitled Le Vent Des Peupliers. It has been translated by the award-winning British playwright, Tom Stoppard, and it won an Olivier Award in London for the best new comedy of 2005.

Heroes concerns three First World War veterans, who years later are planning their escape from a care home. Their imagined nemesis is Sister Madeleine, a woman we never meet. At times Heroes is reminiscent of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, where the principal characters discuss and wait for something to happen, a something that never comes to pass. It also has a touch of Don Quixote as we remember that comic hero striving for epic and chivalrous adventures. And finally there might even be a whiff of Benny Hill with its bawdy humour and blatant absurdity.

These three amigos with provide you with a laugh, a smile and perhaps even a groan as they attempt to cope with life’s calamities. However, mostly Heroes is about friendship, courage and the quest for purpose.
