The Dark Side of the Universe: Sat Oct 15

Come and hear author and physicist Pauline Gagnon talk about the Dark side of the Universe.

Since the discovery of the Higgs bosun, particle physics now has a powerful new tool to describe the material world. But all this still only amounts to 5% of the universe. Everything else is described as either dark matter or dark energy, both of which remain completely mysterious.

To explain the biggest challenge in particle physics today Dr. Gagnon will describe the current model, then review the evidence for the existence of dark matter and dark energy as provided by astronomy and cosmology. In conclusion, she will discuss ongoing experiments that attempt to detect these recently discovered materials, on Earth, deep at the bottom of mines, and on board the International Space Station.
