St. Mary Magdalene Church Fair: Sat Jul 9

Come and join us for the St Mary Magdalene Church Fair 2016 on 9th July. The theme for this year's fair is "A Day in Provence". Fair opens at 10:30 am and finishes at 3:30 pm. All are welcome!

Events at the Church Fair include: Silent Auction, Fish Pond, Buy the Book, Tea Room, Face Painting, Weight of the Bottle, Children's Games, Music & Entertainment.

National Aboriginal Day: Tue Jun 21

The Mayne Island Library, School and Community will be coming together to acknowledge our second National Aboriginal Day and the end of this year's Reading Challenge on June 21st at the Mayne Island School.

11:30 - Gather in the school gymnasium for a welcome and lunch.
12:45 - Walk together from the school to Emma and Felix Jack Park for a cairn-building ceremony. Each participant is asked to bring one palm-sized stone to represent a student who suffered at a residential school. (Rides will be available if needed.)
1:45 - Walk back to the school together.
2:15 - Talking Circle led by John Aitken in the school gym.
3:00 - Wind-up.

Seedlings Early Years Nature Day Camp: July 11-15

News Flash! There's still room for a few more children ages 3-5 years in the GICEL (Gulf Islands Centre for Ecological Learning) Early Years Nature Day Camp "Seedlings", July 11-15 here on Mayne Island this summer.

This is a great opportunity for your child or grandchild to enjoy outdoor fun, play & learning, in a safe and creative environment. We go hiking, explore nature, build forts, make art, play games, enjoy stories and songs everyday; healthy snacks & picnics too.

Emergency Program Evacuation Exercise: Sat Jun 4

Mayne Island Emergency Program and Mayne Island Fire Department are conducting an Evacuation Exercise on Sat. June 4th 2016 to help the community prepare for potential evacuations, especially during periods of high/extreme fire rating.

The exercise scenario is a simulated wild fire in a preselected area; Fire department vehicles and firefighters will be in the area to notify the residents of this exercise.

Those residents who are willing to participate by voluntarily evacuating their homes will be directed to proceed to the Reception Centre. Anyone else on Mayne Island who wishes to participate as an evacuee or a helper with the Emergency Program is welcome to join us. Volunteer evacuees will provide the staff at the Reception Centre invaluable experience in the process of providing appropriate assistance to people if and when they have to evacuate.

If you would like to participate in this exercise please contact Eden at (250) 222-0285 by May 30th so we can order sufficient food for all participants. Please provide your name, address, phone number and any special dietary requirements. Participants should expect a phone call on Saturday to advise them of the commencement of the exercise.

Mayne Island Chamber of Commerce AGM: Wed May 25

The Mayne Island Community Chamber of Commerce's AGM will be held on Wed. May 25th this year at the Agricultural Hall. Starting at 7 pm, the past year and future of Chamber activities will be discussed, and a talk will be given by Doug Wedman, from the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan. Elections will be held and membership forms will also be available.

Gulf Islands Sexual Safety Survey ends May 31st

Consent and Sexual Assault Study in the Southern Gulf Islands.

Your input is needed. A community wide survey is requesting your feedback during the month of May focusing on our understanding of consent and sexual assault. All community members age 14 and over are invited to participate and share their thoughts on these matters.

Your feedback will provide a better understanding of community awareness of these issues and the services that pertain to them for Mayne, Galiano, Saturna, Salt Spring and Pender Islands. The Gulf Island Sexual Assault and Consent Project is a three-year initiative funded by Status of Women Canada, conducted by Salt Spring Women Opposed to Violence and Abuse (SWOVA) Community Development and Research Society and its community partners.

Cob Building Workshop: May 16 — 20

This 5 day workshop will have us working on building up the walls of Pam's dream cob home located on Mayne Island.

We will be learning all the ins and out of mixing and building with clay, sand and straw, turning this material into walls, shelves and benches. We will be installing windows and building directly from the foundation up.

During daily morning instruction times we will be learning about all different aspects of natural building from design to roofs and plasters and everything in between.

Join us, learn, get dirty and have fun all.
