Stern Tying, Anchoring & Knots Course: Apr 13 & 20

Some anchorages are crowded, narrow, or steep and deep right close to shore.  Sometimes, dropping the anchor and backing up to tie a line ashore is necessary.  It limits your swinging and can also keep your bow pointed into a prevailing wind.  Tying to the shore when anchored on a sloping bottom will pull your anchor up the slope and help keep it from dislodging.  Shore tying is an acquired skill.  It takes patience and practice.

Before you try shore tying you must know how to anchor correctly. And finally, you need to know how to correctly tie appropriate knots to hold everything together.

Course description: How to stern tie your boat to the shore in a congested anchorage. Learn about the types of anchors, where to anchor and how to set the anchor. Learn which knots are best to use for different situations.
Instructor: Blair Smith
Dates: Wednesday April 13 & Wednesday April 20 (a 2-day course).
Time: 7 - 9 pm
Location: Church House
Cost: Free to AMIB members, $10 for non-members.

Please contact Bryan Westby ( bcwestby@shaw.ca ) by email or phone (250) 539-3412 to register.

Victoria to Juneau by Kayak: Wed Mar 30

The Association of Mayne Island Boaters, invites you to share the magnificent adventure of 3 “older” but intrepid BC paddlers who fulfilled their longtime ambition to Kayak from Victoria all the way to Juneau Alaska.

The northwest coast of North America is truly a kayaking paradise. Thousands of miles of pristine northern coastal wilderness with few communities, home to many First Nations and others who make their living from the land and the sea around it. Deep fjords and countless islands cover the inside passage from the Salish Sea to the Gulf of Alaska like a great jigsaw puzzle. Eagles patrol the skies, bears and wolves roam the land, Orcas and other whales cruise the salmon-rich waters of these remote areas. David Maxwell, Rob Zacharias & Alan Campbell, found the challenge of exploring the coastline by paddling more than 1000 nm over 76 days, a dream come true.

Wednesday March 30th 7.30 pm. Ag Hall. Admission by donation - Free to AMIB members. For further information please contact Allen Slade allen.james.slade@gmail.com.
