Old Man Luedecke: Sat Feb 6

Mayne Island Music Society is pleased to present Old Man Luedecke on Saturday, Feb. 6 at St. Mary Magdalene Church. Doors open at 7 pm, starts at 7:30. Tickets are $20 and are available at Happy Tides, Farm Gate and Home Hardware.

Hope you'll come out and enjoy this great musician! Old Man Luedecke (Chris Leudecke) is a two-time Juno Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and banjo player from Chester, Nova Scotia. His 2008 album, Proof of Love, won a 2009 Juno Award for traditional folk album of the year.

CBC says of his most recent album last year: “You can hear the cabin in the snowy Nova Scotia woods where it was recorded, and you can hear the beautiful conversation between Old Man Luedecke and his associate, Tim O’Brien.

Boater's Weather Course: Wed Feb 10


The safety and comfort of those who venture out-on-the water have always been weather dependent. In this course students will become keener observers of the weather.

Course description:
• Description of weather on BC’s coast.
• Familiarization with weather systems and terminology.
• Understanding Marine weather forecasts.
• Where to obtain good weather information at home and on the water.

Reading Centre Society AGM Sat Jan 30

The Mayne Reading Centre Society's Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, January 30th at 2 pm at Church House.

At this meeting the Board will be presenting a budget proposal for installing new carpet tiles and replacing and earthquake-proofing much of our old shelving. The Board is recommending that we use the society's banked assets in order to accomplish this renovation. We will be asking our members for approval of this expenditure at the AGM.

We urge everyone who is interested to attend. Memberships are available at the door at a cost of $5. Refreshments will be served.

MayneNews isn't sure of when these satellite photos were replaced but Google at some point in the last 6 months updated the photos for Mayne Island on Google Maps. Previously the photos were low resolution and blurry, but new photos taken on June 7th, 2015 show extremely detailed images.

As the above image of Miners Bay shows, objects that are only a few feet wide can be easily identified and you may recognize your own vehicle in your driveway. Here's a direct link to Mayne Island in Google Maps, showing the satellite view. Zoom in and look around.

Movie Night - The Dance of Words: Fri Jan 22

The Dance of Words features young artists who have embraced their deaf identity in adulthood after spending a difficult childhood in the grey zone between hearing culture and deaf culture. These emerging artists show how they are using the arts to build a deaf culture that makes them proud. They shine a spotlight on their community while promoting and advancing deaf culture with a keen sensitivity.

MIECS Parent & Tot Swim Lessons 2016: Wed Jan 20

MIECS Parent & Tot Swim Classes 2016. Water Safety Skills & Swim Lessons for 3 - 5 year olds, accompanied by an adult.

• Classes begin next Wednesday, January 20.
• 1 pm until 2 pm, in the pool at the Mayne Island Resort.
• Every Wednesday for eight weeks.
• Instructor: Laara Jarvey.
• $2 drop-in fee or $12 for all eight classes.
• Children must be toilet trained.

Ball/dance fitness classes at the Ag Hall

Food and Agriculture Strategy Workshop: Fri Jan 15

You are invited to a potluck lunch and Community Engagement Workshop on Friday January 15, 2016, noon to 4 p.m. Linda Beer has graciously offered to host this event at her home at 540 Fernhill Road.

In the past year and a half, there have been a series of community meetings and much data has been collected. Farmers, growers, gardeners, processors, restauranteurs and everyone passionate about the state of the local food economy have been most helpful in the process of creating a Food and Agriculture Strategy document. At this meeting, the focus will be on the Mayne Island portion of the document. Your views and opinions for the future of food and agriculture on Mayne Island are very important.

Evening Fitness at Community Centre: Begins Mon Jan 11

We are looking into another set of evening fitness classes starting later in January. We need your commitment (looking for at least 6 people per class) to schedule and run the classes.

We will start with a 6-week set of classes; proposed starting date will be January 11, 2016, if we get the commitments.

Proposed Evening Class Schedule:

Monday 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM: Interval Circuit Class – With Dave Ewanchuk.
A self-paced workout that is designed to meet individual needs; offering intervals of cardio, resistant and flexibility training.

Wednesdays 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM: High Energy Conditioning Class – With Deanna Stobart.
An energetic workout involving high intensity moves to improve strength, cardio, balance and coordination.

Costs: $75.00 for 12 prepaid classes. $37.50 for one day per week only. 50% off for students. Unless you are an existing fitness member who has already prepaid for classes. $5.00 Annual Community Centre Membership fee is required for non-members.

Time For Tai Chi? Begins Mon Jan 4

Whether you're a new comer, a returning beginner or an experienced Tai Chi student, perhaps your New Year's resolution to invite more gentle exercise, to learn something new, or just get back into the flow of it, can be answered by signing up for the Winter Session of Tai Chi.

Beginning Monday morning January 4th, at the Community Centre. Cost is $25 for the 8 to 10 lesson session, plus $5 for a Community Centre Society membership. Or come try it out in the beginning week for the $5 drop in fee.
