Open Burning Restrictions Now In Effect


The Coastal Fire district and Mayne Island Fire Department has issued a Category 2 open fire prohibition to help prevent human caused fires and protect public safety.

• Category 2 open fires include 2m backyard piles, fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, burning barrels (incinerators) or burning cages of any size or description.

This prohibition will remain in effect until Oct. 16, 2015, or the public is otherwise notified.
• This order does not prohibit campfires that are a 0.5m high by 0.5m wide or smaller and burn only seasoned firewood (fire permit required), or apply to certified cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.
• Campfires will be prohibited no later than midnight June 30th 2015 or when the Fire Hazard risk becomes "Extreme" - whichever occurs first.

No person may ignite, start or maintain, or allow or cause to be lighted, ignited, started or maintained, an Open Air Fire except in compliance with MIID Bylaw 161.
