Festival Active Pass: A Nature and Arts Festival - Apr 17 - 19

Imagine the Agricultural Hall grounds on Mayne Island covered with large event tents surrounded by local food vendors and live music. This is Festival Central, the place to gather during the festival and it will become a reality Friday April 17 through to Sunday April 19, 2015.

Festival Central is the hub of the festival from which you can choose to go on guided explorations of the marine shorelines, the forests or the bird communities of Mayne Island. You could do that and still have time to view the inspired multi-media works of our local and regional artists at the Library, the Agricultural Hall or the Mayne School Auditorium. If you wish to do a bit of shopping look to the Community Centre where an Artists Market will be in full swing or you can visit the many studios and galleries that will be open to welcome you – just follow the signs. In addition, there will be workshops on writing, photography and watercolour painting. Adventures to our neighbouring islands and outstanding tours of our marine waters are also offered. As are two mini festivals – authors’ readings and a film festival. Interested? Then look no further than www.festivalactivepass.com.

For those who want to improve their skills we have included some incredible workshops on writing and connection for women with Katherine Stevenson, on nature photography with Mike Yip or on field sketching and watercolour painting with Rob Butler.

If you want a little adventure off Mayne Island, the festival is offering many trips around Active Pass and to the Belle Chain Islets. This is the peak season for diverse and abundant bird sightings as well as marine mammals to photograph or just to watch. Our island neighbours are also providing great opportunities – we have guided tours of the Forests, Wildflowers and Birds of Pender Island, a Hydrophones, Whales and Trails tour of Saturna Island and a Music in Nature tour on Galiano Island. All will be made accessible using small boat water taxis.

We are also pleased to provide two mini festivals within the larger festival – an authors’ festival and a film festival. Our Mayne Island Library is sponsoring the former and has a schedule of regionally and nationally known authors who will read portions of their works as well as participate in discussions afterwards. This will be a very unique opportunity to have this many authors available in one place. We are very fortunate to have in this region and on Mayne Island, film makers and animators whose works have been and are classics in the genre. The Festival Active Pass film festival will be a selection of short works from these artists, some of who will be present at the premiere for your questions.

Special events will be an added feature of the festival and all involve locally sourced or made food. The Food Fair will be the most visible being set up around the Festival Central tents providing a selection of great food over the lunch period. In addition, every day, live music will fill the tents for your pleasure and entertainment. Our Festival Feast is a culmination of the celebration of where we live and what is around us. This is a local food feast prepared by a host of volunteers and professionals that you will not want to miss. Entertainment will be provided by the Three Worlds Band from Galiano, and a performance by the winner of our festival song contest. On the Friday evening we will host an Opening Reception available to all with locally-made finger foods accompanied by a performance of the Mayne Island Singers under the direction of Dale Rasmussen.

More detailed information and an easy to use on-line registration system are available on our website www.festivalactivepass.com. You can register for everything from there. If you wish to register manually, a mail in registration form can be printed from the website. There will also be an opportunity to register in person at Festival Central during the first two days of the festival. Tickets for the Festival Feast evening can be purchased directly from the Mayne Island Conservancy, Farm Gate Store or the Trading Post.

This festival is a first for this region and at its core it is a celebration of this exquisite place and the people inspired by it. Come for the day or stay for the weekend.
