First Annual Gulf Islands Unfringed: Feb 13 & 14

Years ago, people on the Gulf Islands used to travel back and forth to attend each-others events. The islands' populations were smaller than today, yet visiting other islands was a common community practice.

Nowadays we live more isolated lives. We rarely attend each-others events. And yet, a live theatrical performance is a moment of magic between the performers and the audience. A performance makes us suspend disbelief, and in that vulnerable space, it becomes a powerful medium for building community. But if we can't bring islanders to the entertainment, then we can bring the entertainment to the islands. And what better than an All Island Tour?

The Islands Trust considers the islands a federation of independent islands within an archipelago. CRD's Economic Development Commission coined the buzz word 'region'. At a meeting of the EDC in the spring of last year, Brian Crumblehulme was approached by Arnie Bell of Galiano Island who suggested that following on from the success of Emotional Creature, a collaborative all-island tour of short, island-derived plays should follow. And that got us organizing (On Mayne we had a play writing contest, our fall production show cased five of these the eight plays submitted and we selected The Audition to be our contribution to the 4 Island tour). Therin Gower joined in as the organizer from SaltSpring Community Theatre and Pam Janszen joined us as the organizer for Saturna’s Theatre on the Rock.

And here we are, in February, about to launch the First Annual Gulf Island Unfringed Tour. Four plays written by islanders, played by island actors. Two short-short plays from Salt Spring (The Worst Thing and Western Music in the Meringue) and one act play each from Mayne (The Audition) and Galiano (A Shaggy Cow Story) make up this inaugural event.

It will be a lively evening of entertainment by three islands' worth of traveling players. The show will be performing two nights on Mayne: Friday February 13th and Saturday February 14th at the Ag Hall, Doors at 7:30 p.m. Show at 8 p.m. Advance Tickets available at The Trading Post & Farm Gate. Watch for more information on the plays on the Mayne Island Little Theatre Facebook page in the coming weeks.

The tour will also visit Saturna Island on Feb 12th, Galiano on Feb 20th & 21st and Salt Spring on Feb. 27th & 28th. Be sure to let your friends on our neighbouring islands know about the dates in their communities.
