Earthquake! Are We Ready? Sat Sep 27

Mayne Island Emergency Program is sponsoring an Earthquake presentation on September 27 at 1 PM at Mayne Island Community Centre.

Come and learn how earthquakes might affect our community, and how to prepare for them.

Listen to a first-hand account from Captain Brock Henson, Saanich Fire Department and Saanich Emergency Program Officer, who assisted in the recovery process after the 2011 Christchurch, New Zealand earthquakes.

Light refreshments, information handouts, and door prizes will be available.

There is no charge for this presentation.

We live in an extremely active earthquake zone. Records show that 6 of the 10 largest earthquakes in Canadian history occurred in BC. Recently, we have experienced many earthquakes locally, including a 6.7 in April, 2014, off North Vancouver Island, and smaller earthquakes in Victoria (2.4) and Sidney (3.3). Over the past 3 years, major earthquakes have occurred in Alaska (7.5 and 8.0), Haida Gwaii (7.7 and 6.2), Japan (9), New Zealand (6.3) and last month in Napa Valley, California (6.0).

We all know that the “Big One” is coming. It may not be for another hundred years, or it could happen 5 minutes from now. But when it hits; depending on the epicentre, it will likely cause devastating widespread damage to our infrastructure and have immense physical, psychological, and economic impacts on all our lives.

Join us September 27th to learn more.
