Announcing the MILT 2014 Play Writing Contest

Mayne Island Little Theatre invites members of the community to submit a short play for our fall production of homegrown talent. Your previously hidden flair for the dramatic (or the comedic) will now have the opportunity to be showcased and perhaps go on to fame (but not likely fortune – but fame is good).

Theme – Island Life (could be a real or fictional island).
Length – Approximately 20 minutes.
Characters – maximum 3 (actors must be MI based).
Props – minimal to none.
Deadline for submission – August 15, 2014.

Plays will be reviewed by a MILT appointed committee who will contact authors of pieces selected for further consideration. Playwrights will be invited to a workshop where the plays will be read after which final selections will be made. 4 to 6 pieces will be selected to be included in MILT’s Fall production scheduled for November. The play with the greatest audience appeal will go on to tour the Southern Gulf Islands and Salt Spring as a part of “5 Islands – 5 Plays” tour in February 2015. Send your completed works either by email to Deb Foote at or to Deb’s attention through the “FreeMail” offered through the Gulfport Realty office.

This is really a great opportunity for budding playwrights to test their abilities at plot and dialogue may not win, but life is like that, eh?

Friday June 6, 2014. 7:30 pm. Ag Hall.

Sea star wasting syndrome is affecting many species along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska. In some areas, massive mortality has resulted -- particularly for the sunflower star in BC. Sea stars are important predators and prey in our marine environment so this event will potentially have major impacts moving forward. Scientists continue to search for the precise cause or causes of this syndrome.

Andy Lamb is a renowned marine biologist and co-author of Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest as well as Coastal Fishes of the Pacific Northwest (both with Harbour Publishing).

MILT Presents Bob Bossin's Davy The Punk: Fri May 16

Celebrated Canadian singer-songwriter Bob Bossin returns to live theatre after too long away, with “Songs and Stories of Davy the Punk”. Through stories, songs and visual images, “Davy the Punk” recreates the Threepenny-Opera gambling underworld of the 1930s and 40s, while also telling a revealing tale of family surprises.

The father Bossin knew growing up in Toronto was a quiet, conservative booking agent for mainstream night clubs. The father he later discovered was Davy the Punk, a pivotal figure in Canada’s mid-20th century gambling business, whose battles with the law created precedents that affect us to this day.

The songs and stories in Davy the Punk are of cops and gamblers, grifters and grafters, mensches and gonifs, fathers and sons. By turns they are funny, suspenseful, troubling, and touching. And they are the maelstrom that birthed a beloved Canadian performer who, according to Pete Seeger, is “funny, informative and inspiring at the same time.” Davy the Punk played to sold-out houses and standing ovations in its first performances at the Gabriola Theatre Festival and Toronto's Ashkenaz Festival.

Bob Bossin first came to musical prominence in the 1970s as the founder of Canada’s legendary Stringband. In the late 1980s, he toured his one-man musical, “Bossin's Home Remedy for Nuclear War” for 200 performances across Canada, as well as in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. “Davy the Punk”, the book, will be available this spring via The Porcupine's Quill.

Southern Gulf Islands Early Years Survey

Mayne Island Early Childhood Society– the Southern Gulf Islands Early Years Initiative!

We’ve been working away at the SGI Early Years pilot project and have launched the first phase: our on-line survey.

Why a survey? One of our goals is to learn more from community, families and service providers in the region, about what helps them sustain their lives in the Southern Gulf Islands and what hinders them. Working with other islanders, we would like to use this knowledge to help define a collaborative vision for the future.

So please take a few minutes to complete the survey

And keep an eye out for the Early Years Colloquium on Mayne, Saturday May 31st!
