Hue: A Matter of Colour - Fri Apr 25

Have you ever wondered about how shades of skin colour impact those within a family or community?

Mayne Island Library Film Night. 7:30 pm at the Ag Hall.

This feature documentary by renowned director and cinematographer Vic Sarin is a personal yet global investigation into the history and current state of colourism: the discrimination within one ethnicity based on differences in skin tone. Sarin travels the globe to discuss this complex cross-cultural social issue with individuals whose lives it affects, including a Filipina entrepreneur whose business has flourished within the billion-dollar skin-whitening industry.

Hue leads viewers on a thoughtful and surprising journey to the heart of a painful and pervasive social issue that not only polices appearance, but also class, gender, and geography.

BC Ferries Schedule error for Thu Apr 17

It has been confirmed by BC Ferries customer service staff that there is an error in their schedule for Swartz Bay to Village Bay for Thursday April 17. Since it was pointed out by a concerned Mayne Islander to their staff (after several phone calls, receiving incorrect info from staff and many long minutes on the phone) BC Ferries has amended their schedule on the web site, but the printed schedules available are still incorrect.

BC Ferries have acknowledged their mistake and the schedule errors in a service notice issued April 10th.

The printed schedules do not indicate a sailing going from Swartz to Village Bay at 4:10 pm on Thursday April 17, when in fact there is a sailing at that time.

It is additionally confusing because that day is the day before the Good Friday holiday and the ferries are adopting a Friday schedule for that day. Deciphering all the notations, triangles and squares is difficult even for seasoned BC Ferries customers. If you have questions about the schedule you should phone BC Ferries customer service line at 1-888-BC FERRY (223-3779) or check out their web site www.bcferries.com.

Community Garden: Plots Available Now

Fellow gardeners: Now that warmer weather is here it is time to start planning the garden season: buying seeds, starting plants indoors and envisioning fresh organic produce on our tables. It is hard to beat the pleasure of knowing you have grown it yourself and eaten it on the same day it is harvested. It tastes so good!

The Mayne Island Community Garden, located behind the Community Centre, offers a chance to garden in a sunny deer proof environment with water available (saved from the Community Centre roof).

In addition to us each having our own plot there are communal beds tended by designated members. The produce from these beds is available for all members to enjoy.

"Work" parties are held during the growing season and afford an opportunity to meet and socialize with your fellow gardeners, followed by delicious seasonal snacks. This year we have some garden plots available waiting for new gardeners to tend to them. The cost is $20/year. In addition, membership in the Community Centre is $5 if you are not already a member.

If you want to get your hands in the dirt and grow some food for yourself at the Community Garden please contact Diane (250) 539-5079 or Jeannine (250) 539-9998.
