Public Meeting About Deer: Sat Sep 21

The current initiative to deal with Mayne Island’s deer problem will hold one more public meeting, on Saturday, September 21, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, at the Community Centre. Doors will be open at 2:00 pm, when presentation materials from previous meetings will be available for viewing and discussion prior to the formal start of the meeting at 2:30 pm.

This process was initiated by the BC Fish & Wildlife Branch earlier this summer, and it culminates three years of public discussions on Mayne Island regarding the invasive fallow deer and deer populations in general. Representatives from the Mayne Island Conservancy Society and the Mayne Island Residents and Ratepayers Association have agreed to facilitate open community discussion on this issue, in the hope of leading to a potential solution.

The purpose of this meeting will be to explain the details of how hunting could work on Mayne Island, subject to the regulations to be worked out with Fish & Wildlife. Some time will be allocated to airing alternative perspectives, but as these have already been extensively covered this meeting is intended to draw conclusions and seek direction from the community.
