"A Hundred Days" book launch at Library - Sat Feb 2

You are invited to a Book Launch & Reading Sat. Feb. 2nd, 4 - 5 pm, at the Library.

"A Hundred Days" - a botanical novel is a gorgeous paperback with 100 pen and ink illustrations. It was written by Julie Emerson on Mayne Island. This book is an appreciation of our island life and a wonderful reference for any gardener.

In this novel, Rosemary lives on a Gulf Island from the end of May until Labour Day. Every day she chooses a different flower or herb in history and mythology, from Day 1: Peony to Day 100: Pearly Everlasting. She records her observations of each local flower and herb as well as her experiences one summer on the island.

Julie Emerson will give a reading from "A Hundred Days", with local comments, and sign books.

MICS Volunteer Broom Removal Event - Thu Jan 24

The Mayne Island Conservancy’s first broom removal event of 2013 will be at Henderson Park, Mayne Island, on January 24th from 1 pm - 3 pm and we need volunteers!

We will meet at the parking lot by the kiosk. If you are unsure of how to get there please let us know. This is a great chance to get to know/enjoy Henderson Park and have some interesting conversations, all while getting some exercise. We will be working in an easier part of the park terrain-wise, no hiking will be required and the ground is not steep (no sides of hills for this removal day).

Please RSVP to stewardship@conservancyonmayne.com or phone the office at (250) 539-5168.

We will provide all tools needed, we just ask that you bring suitable clothing, footwear and water.

We would love to get some more volunteers out to our events, so if you know of anyone who might be interested please pass this on.

For further information please contact Lauren, stewardship@conservancyonmayne.com

Look Again! Family Movie Morning - Sat Jan 26

The Mayne Island Conservancy Society presents a family movie morning with Bill Maylone who, in 1990 made six short multiple-award winning films for the National Film Board targeted for primary and intermediate students.

Where: Agricultural Hall
What time: 10 am, Saturday, January 26, 2013
Admission by Donation
Free Popcorn!

The films are without dialogue and use lots of very interesting special effects. The series, called "Look Again", encourages viewers to explore, wonder, imagine, question and look again. As the two children in the films investigate a variety of natural phenomena - the seasons, physical laws such as gravity, familiar creatures, night, structures and their functions and ecological relationships - the viewers, both young and older, are invited to look more carefully and appreciate the fascinating complexity of their environment.

Bill will be present to introduce and talk about the films, show lots of behind the scenes slides, discuss how some of the unusual shots and special effects were done, and encourage participation.

Do come, with or without family, and celebrate the work (that many of us don't know) of the MayneLiner editor.

All present Neighbourhood Contacts are invited, as well as anyone interested in volunteering.

Please register - call Gerrie at (250) 539-5148 home or (250) 508-3002 (cell)

The Emergency Program relies on volunteer Neighbourhood Contacts as a vital part of the program. The tasks take no more than 5 to 6 hours in a year. Most of that time can be just a conversation with your neighbours.

The Neighbourhood Contact will:
1. Maintain an up-to-date list of your neighbours’ names & phone numbers.
2. Inform the Coordinator of any changes: newcomers and those who move away.
3. In case of an incident Eg: fire, severe windstorm, heavy snowfall, extended power outage: you may receive instructions to contact residents and relay a message.

• Contacts are not responsible for organizing meetings, 1st Aid, or Evacuations
• Contacts are not responsible for going door-to-door during an evacuation
• Contacts may be requested to aid in a telephone distribution of an evacuation alert
• Your health and safety is paramount.

Volunteer Neighbourhood Contacts are urgently needed in the following neighbourhoods:
Laura Point Rd; Neil Rd; Waugh Rd west; Edith Point Rd; S. Georgina Pt Rd; Garrick Rd; Minty Dr; Sunset Dr; Felix Jack Rd; Campbell Bay Rd (lower); Fernhill Rd at Montrose and Montrose Rd; Charter Rd; Caddy Dr; Letour Rd; Wood Dale Dr. (west); Wood Dale Dr (east); Leighton Ln; Spinnaker Dr (central); Spinnaker Dr (upper & east); Dalton Dr. (upper); Mariners Way (central); Marine Dr; Gallagher Bay Rd; Purcell; Steward Dr; Beechwood Dr.

Tai Chi is a Chinese ancient martial art based on Qigong and “internal” or soft style. There are several styles of Tai Chi. The Yang style postures are wide and comfortable. Yang style is more suitable for common people with no martial art training. In Yang style Tai Chi, the structure is not strict and demanding, the body is upright, and the movements are smooth, light, agile and rooted. Yang style 24 Form was created in China in 1956. It is a simplified form that contains all the essential principles of the 108 Form. This shorten form reduces the time required to learn the exercise. It is a nice introductory Form.
