Community Apple Squeeze - Sun Oct 7

Mayne Island is the proud owner of an amazing crusher and press, thanks to donations large and small. For the last three years apple lovers have gathered together on Thanksgiving weekend to press apples using this equipment along with a traditional manual press.

This year the Community Apple Squeeze will take place Sunday October 7 from 10 am to 1 pm in the Ag Hall grounds. With the help of some experienced users, the crusher and press will be in full action. All that is needed are apples and lots of them.

Perhaps you only have a small number of apples – get together with a neighbour or friend who also has apples or just bring what you have. These can be crushed and pressed with the apples of others and the resulting juice shared. Bring clean containers to take your juice away in for either immediate consumption or for freezing. Besides the juice there is a lot of pulp produced. This is excellent for your compost and/or your pigs, chickens or other apple-loving animals so . . . bring containers to take it away. Your compost should not miss out on this opportunity! If you bring your apples in plastic bins these can be used to take away the pulp. And, bring a small donation for the upkeep and ongoing maintenance of the press and crusher.

If you have a significant crop of apples the equipment is available, for a donation, for residents to transport to their own property for pressing. We ask that you participate in a community pressing before taking away the equipment to use on your own. Tom Hobley has prepared a user-friendly manual with lots of photos.

Perhaps you don’t have any apples but just want to come along to witness this exciting part of the fall harvest. Please drop by between 10 am and 1 pm on October 7. You might just get a sample!

Hoping to see many of you apple lovers October 7. If you are bringing apples for pressing please arrive by noon. And, if you want to borrow the crusher and press please call Helen at (250) 539-5619, or if you have any other questions about the event.
