John Charowsky - A Memorial - Tue Aug 7

John only lived on Mayne Island for 10 years, but that is where his heart was home. Mayne is where all of his joys could co-exist peacefully - pottery, music, engineering and family.

On July 10th, John was playing an open mike night at the Tree House Cafe in Ganges on Salt Spring Island. He had performed his four songs, and the crowd had loved him. He was getting back on stage for his encore, when he suddenly collapsed. He'd had a heart attack, and died. He went out of this world doing something he loved.

Please join us on Tuesday, August 7th, in Dinner Bay Park, to honour John's memory. Program begins at 5:15 pm under the tent. Pot luck supper to follow.

All Islands Meeting on Galiano Island

Illustration by Jim Traversy/Artifact Designs  Mayne Island BC
Reconnect the Gulf Islands! Aug 7 - 9

This gathering is being organized by the Island Futures Boat Network people from Gabriola Island (see ), in cooperation with folk on Galiano, Mayne, Salt Spring, Pender, and Saturna. The main circles/meetings and evening music-making are to be on Wednesday, August 8, but people are invited to get there on August 7 and stay over until August 9. As many of us as possible are also being invited to come by small boat (sail, row, power), although this is not required.

Skippers with boats who want to help bring people over and/or back (and also be part of the discussions themselves, if they choose) are especially invited to contact Victor Anthony Note that Island Futures has a grant to reimburse skippers for their fuel and moorage costs.

What's the goal here? In brief, it's to...
"discuss rebuilding the kind of inter-island communication, cooperation, sharing, trade, and transportation that previously existed between the Gulf Islands, potentially to be facilitated by an organized network of existing small boats, and in other ways. This could support our communities to become not only more sustainable, but also more resilient, self-sufficient, and economically relocalized, with all the local islands invited to cooperate." This includes key issues like local food growing, renewable energy, alternative transportation, and community arts & wellbeing (potentially to be discussed in sub-groups on August 8).

2012 Critical Illness Fund Event Video

The fundraiser on Friday June 29 at the Ag Hall went really well with somewhere between $4000 to $5000 raised to benefit the Mayne Island Critical Illness Fund's first recipient, Meredyth.

Here's a video of a few of the scenes from the evening and a montage of the before and after photos that Toby shot.

To see more of Toby's great photos from the evening go to his web site.

Regarding the video - this is my first attempt at recording a video for MayneNews - so I hope to do better in future. Admittedly my high-end video equipment, a point and shoot camera and an iPod Touch  didn't exactly provide great detail, but it was interesting going through the process of editing it all in iMovie.

If anyone has a digital video camera they could lend me for future events that would be great -

Please pass around and share this video and Toby's photos. This event shows what a fantastic and generous community we have here.
