Art show opening night - Fri Feb 3

"Karen Stanley, on Mayne Island almost a year, brings a selection of multi-media pieces from her portfolio as well as work created here on the island. With a quirky outlook informed by domestic life, community arts and low-fi techniques Karen hopes to cause a transformation in the ways we live with & think about art."
February 2012 is my chance to show at the Mayne Reading Room / Trincomali Community Arts Council gallery space. Opening night will be on the Friday, Feb. 3rd from 7 - 9 pm.

Welcome all and please pass along this message if you think of anyone who may like to come. The show will be on for the month of February so if the "opening night" is not convenient, please stop by any time during normal library hours.

There will show a few old pieces and some new work which builds upon my previous octopus theme and is quite different for me. I will show a few prints, some paint and assemblage, a soft sculpture and some painting on paper and driftwood.

- See you Friday night,

We have again created a program of interest, fun, laughter, good food to celebrate this 250 year old tradition.

Take the best that Scotland has to offer, and add an Irish element - Murphy’s Lagh, who I’m sure many of you will remember from Burns Night last year. We are thrilled that Damian Brennan will be returning this year with some surprises that will be revealed on the night.

Concert starts at 8 pm

So, whatever your cultural background, come to the Mayne Island Resort on the 28th and enjoy a taste of all things Scottish, with a splash of Guinness for added flavour. Robbie Burns himself would be right up front enjoying the night.

Yes, there will be Haggis. No, you don’t have to have the Haggis.

See our ad in the Mayneliner for Burns Night details, and our posters in all the usual postery places.

Tai Chi is a Chinese ancient martial art based on Qigong and “internal” or soft style. There are several styles of Tai Chi. The Yang style postures are wide and comfortable. In Yang style Tai Chi, the structure is not strict and demanding, the body is upright, and the movements are smooth, light, agile and rooted. Yang style 24 Form was created in China in 1956. It is a simplified form that contains all the essential principles of the 108 Form. This shorter form reduces the time required to learn the exercise. It is a nice introductory Form.

MICS Movie Night - A Force of Nature - Sat Jan 21

Introduction by Peter Robinson, CEO of the David Suzuki Foundation & Mayne Islander.

David Suzuki, iconic Canadian scientist, educator, broadcaster and activist delivers a 'last lecture' -- what he describes as "a distillation of my life and thoughts, my legacy, what I want to say before I die".

The film interweaves the lecture with scenes from the places and events in Suzuki's life. As such, the film is a biography of ideas -- forged by the major social, scientific, cultural and political events of the past 70 years.

An event not to be missed.

Saturday, January 21st, 7:30 pm

Postal Pain - Call for stories

Have you had an experience with the new postal system on Mayne Island that you’d like to share?

Having heard some of the stories, a couple of MILT members are thinking that there might be an opportunity to poke fun at Canada Post with a play about some of the recent shenanigans! We’re guessing that although many of the stories don’t seem funny at all right now – they will in retrospect!

Send your story to carolonmayne@shaw.ca and g.noonan@shaw.ca  – and we’ll see what we can make of it!
