Respect Email Privacy

Not a subject that is necessarily Mayne Island related but something that I've been noticing lately both from Mayne Island emailers and others. Sometimes when people decide that all of their friends just absolutely must hear about the latest issue that they find important, they make the mistake of exposing everyone else's private email address to all their contacts.

So I made the cartoon-infographic above. Please feel free to copy it and send it to someone you've noticed that has made the same mistake.

Another related issue is passing on your friend's email addresses to web sites such as e-card online greeting card sites or sites that say something like "send this article to a friend". Whenever a web site asks you to give them someone else's email address, — don't do it. In many cases the web site may be performing a service and keeping that email address you just gave them private, but you don't know that. And it's not really your right to pass on other people's email addresses to third parties. Just think if they asked you for your friend's phone number and home address too ...

And just a note regarding the MayneNews email list: I use an email service provider, MailChimp, that has very high standards around the issues of privacy and spam. Information submitted to the list when you subscribe is kept strictly private and will never be used for any other purposes than sending you the MayneNews emails. If you decide to unsubscribe from the list you will never be contacted again. ( Unless of course you realize what a mistake unsubscribing was and decide to re-subscribe.)

Kids Halloween Party at the Fire Hall - Oct 31st 6PM

The red boots are out about town looking for your spare change in support of the Halloween Party. Thank you for your support.

Please Note: Fernhill Road will be closed to all traffic from Felix Jack Road to MacKay’s farm gate from approximately 7:30 Pm to 8:15 Pm for the fireworks display.

Thanks again to the MacKay’s for generously allowing the use of their field to stage the fireworks display – even better this year!

Halloween at the Fire Hall is a community activity. Everyone is welcome to come and join in. Gather around the big bonfire with old friends and new, and enjoy some free hot chocolate and hotdogs! Put on your best or scariest Halloween Costume or come as you are.

MIFD Food Bank drive — Oct28—Nov15

The Mayne Island Firefighters need your help to fill the Food Bank!

Mayne Island Fire Rescue, Shaw Communications, and Campbell's Foods are making Halloween time, Oct.28 to Nov. 15, "Fill the Food Bank" days on Mayne.

We are coordinating with the Fire Fighters Kids Halloween Party (6 pm on Oct. 31st) to make it a great day for everyone and collect a lot of food – Please bring a non-perishable food item to the Fire Hall on Halloween night for the Food Bank.

All food donations collected on Mayne island will be matched by an equal weight donation by Shaw Communications and Campbell's Foods. And all the food collected on Mayne, stays on Mayne!

Working together, we can do amazing things! This October & November, let’s fill the Food Bank.

We have added two more drop-off locations — food donations may be dropped off at any of the following locations:

Look for the special donation boxes at the Fire Hall, Tru Value Foods, Miners Bay Trading Post, Mayne Island School and Sussex Realty until November 15th, 2010. All food donations up to November 15th will be weighed, and Shaw Communications and Campbell's Foods will match the weight of the food we collect. Sorry, cash donations are not matched.

Conservation Covenant Workshop — Sat Oct 30

By request the Mayne Island Conservancy Society is offering a workshop on Conservation Covenants on October 30th from 11am to 3:30pm at the Ag Hall (lunch provided).

This is a follow up from our workshop on the Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory mapping last April. The workshop will include stories told by landowners from Pender and Galiano who have placed conservation covenants on all or part of their property and short case studies from a DVD called People Protecting Places.

Following lunch, Kate Emmings, Ecosystems Protection Specialist with the Islands Trust Fund, will talk about the Natural Area Protection Tax Exemption Program (NAPTEP) and Adam Taylor, Executive Director of Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT), will address other covenanting possibilities including steps to be taken towards achieving a conservation covenant. If time permits, there will be an introduction to the EcoGift program.

Islands Trust Fund accepting applications for membership on advisory panel

The Islands Trust Fund is looking towards the horizon and needs your help.

The Islands Trust Fund invites applications from Islands Trust Area landowners and residents interested in sitting as members on Regional Conservation Plan Advisory Panels to provide advice and guidance on the draft 2011-2015 Regional Conservation Plan.

The Regional Conservation Plan outlines goals and objectives for land conservation in the Islands Trust Area, and sets out a strategy for the Islands Trust Fund to meet those goals and objectives. Sitting on a Regional Conservation Plan Advisory Panel is an excellent opportunity for islanders interested in and knowledgeable of conservation to help guide the direction of land conservation and preservation in the Islands Trust Area

Mayne Island Music Society is excited about hosting a Halloween dance with the Lester Quitzau Trio.

Know Your Grasses — Sun Oct 24

Mayne Island Conservancy Society presents ...

Get to know your grasses with Miriam Isaac-Renton. Miriam will introduce the basics of grass identification, local and invasive species. She will leave you wondering how you could be so fascinated by grass!

Contra Dance with Sybaritic String Band - Sat Oct 23

Dance on Mayne welcomes everyone to attend our Hallowe'en costumed Contra Dance at the Ag Hall Saturday October 23, 2010.

Doors open at 7 pm, and a beginner session will be held at 7:30 for those new to contra dancing. The dance starts at 8 and goes until 11.  Live music will be provided by one of BC's hottest contra bands, the Sybaritic String Band. Watch for our posters for information about them, or check them out on YouTube.

Don't know what contra dancing is?  It's a lively dance form done to fast paced jigs and reels.  All dances are called and taught on the spot.  If you know how to walk, and count to 8, you are good to go.  Knowing your right from your left is an advantage, but not a requirement. You don’t need a partner, and, — oh yeah, it's fun, too.

Tickets are $15, or $10 for kids 12 and under.  Tickets will be available at Happy Tides or phone Dieter at (250) 539-2205.  Attendance is capped at 50, so get your tickets soon to avoid disappointment. Wireless Internet Coming to the Queen of Nanaimo

I thought to ask a member of the crew of the Queen of Nanaimo yesterday if a WiFi service like they currently have at the Tsawwasen Terminal and on the two largest vessels will be coming to the Queen of Nanaimo.

She informed me that no time frame has been given, but the crew was told "it WILL be coming" and that "it's just a matter of time".

They already have an internet connection onboard that is wired to the various BC Ferries computers on the ship. This connection may possibly have to be upgraded because it was explained to me that depending on the ship's position they lose their internet connection from time to time. And then routers would have to be added to broadcast WiFi for the passenger's use.

I would imagine that they would have some technical challenges in getting WiFi to work around a metal vessel. I would guess they would have to place a series of routers in different locations throughout the ship.

I'll try and keep abreast of it and report to MayneNews readers when an announcement of the date occurs. I don't know if anything is planned for the Cumberland or some of the smaller vessels. If anyone has any info on that, please send it to or post it in the comments below.

BC Ferries FOI requests

I came across the following article in the Vancouver Sun, listing their Freedom of Information requests pending with BC Ferries. Something I expect a few Mayne Islanders might find of interest.

BC Ferries has announced that, when it becomes subject to Freedom of Information requests again on Oct. 1, 2010, it will post details of all Freedom of Information requests it receives on its website.

News organizations, including The Vancouver Sun, generally keep details of their FOI requests to themselves, for fear competing newsrooms might ask for the same things and beat them to the story.

With BC Ferries’ policy, however, that need for secrecy no longer exists. Below is a list of some of the requests for information The Sun has sent BC Ferries. You can use the list to come up with ideas for your own FOI requests.

* In an electronic spreadsheet, the name, title, remuneration and expenses for all BC Ferries employees earning $75,000 or more for the 2009-10 fiscal year or the 2009 calendar year.

* A copy of any customer satisfaction surveys conducted by or for BC Ferries since Jan. 1, 2009.

* A copy of any reports or audits prepared by outside agencies or consultants since Jan. 1, 2009, on compensation for BC Ferries’ board and senior executives.

* Any reports prepared by or for BC Ferries on the collision at the Mayne Island ferry dock on August 3, 2010, not including any reports already publicly released or available on the BC Ferries website.

* A copy of any reports produced by or for BC Ferries since Jan. 1, 2010, on the anticipated cost of offering WiFi service on some ferries routes and the actual cost and challenges involved in rolling out the service.

* A copy of any contingency plans produced by or for BC Ferries since Jan. 1, 2008, on how to prepare for an increase in ridership during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

* A copy of any report produced by or for BC Ferries since Feb. 1, 2010, on how the corporation dealt with increased traffic during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

* A copy of CEO David Hahn’s employment contract.

* A copy of the employment contracts for Rob Clarke, Mike Corrigan and Glen Schwartz.

* A copy of any internal reports, memos, briefing notes or media lines produce by or for BC Ferries since Nov. 1, 2009, on how the corporation should respond to the comptroller-general’s report.

* Any overall analysis prepared by BC Ferries since Jan. 1, 2009, comparing the profitability and net cost of all its routes.

* A copy of any e-mails between David Hahn and Transportation Minister Shirley Bond since June 1, 2009.

* A copy of any e-mails between David Hahn and former Ministry of Transportation Kevin Falcon between June 1 and June 15, 2009.

* Any reports prepared by or for BC Ferries since Jan. 1, 2006 on the steps needed to implement a mandatory drug testing program.

* A copy of any reports prepared by or for BC Ferries since Jan. 1, 2006, on the scale of drug use at BC Ferries.

* An itemized list of David Hahn’s expenses since Jan. 1, 2009. I want all fields associated with each expense, such as the date and category of each expense (hotel, taxi, food, per diem). If possible, please provide this in spreadsheet format (ie. Microsoft Excel).

* A copy of all emails from or to David Hahn and from or to Darrin Bowland between March 1 and March 30, 2006, concerning the Queen of the North and/or ship safety at BC Ferries.

* Any memos or correspondence to BC Ferries staff since Nov. 1, 2009, on how staff and management should respond to the corporation being subject to Freedom of Information requests again.

* Any estimates produced by or for BC Ferries since Nov. 1, 2009, estimating the cost to BC Ferries of responding to Freedom of Information requests.

* A copy of all e-mails from or to David Hahn, Mark Stefanson, Deborah Marshall or BC Ferries’ FOI manager since Jan. 1, 2009, on the corporations’ plans to post details of FOI requests, and records released through FOI, on its website.
