Ferron - Outdoor stage at the Ag Hall July 24

Hot on the heels of the recently sold-out performance by Roy Forbes, the Mayne Island Music Society is preparing to bring yet another Canadian icon to Mayne. In addition to being one of Canada’s most famous folk musicians, Ferron is well known as one of the most influential writers and performers of women’s music. Have a listen at www.ferrononline.com

Since her debut album, Ferron in 1977, Ferron has produced 14 albums and has toured extensively in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Her 1984 Album Shadows on a Dime, earned her the accolade of “culture hero” from Rolling Stone magazine.

Ferron’s voice is rich and beautiful. She has been compared to Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. “Ferron is a real salt of the earth singer who approaches her art with sleeves rolled up, ready to dive in. She walks her talk with heart exposed and performs with a courage and commitment that few other artists ever muster...” (Heselgrave 2008).

Don’t miss this opportunity to see/hear Ferron on the outside stage at the Ag Hall on July 24th.

Tickets are $18 at Happy Tides and $23 at the gate. Gates open at 6:00 pm; music begins at 7:30.

Opening act: Fish & Bird.

'Dance On Mayne' Summer Picnic - Sun. July 18th

The members of Dance On Mayne folk dancing club extend an invitation to you, your family and friends, to attend our first annual summer picnic, followed by dancing in the open air.

Join us on Sunday July 18th, beginning at 1 pm at the Community Centre on Felix Jack Road.

Bring everything you need for a truly old-fashioned picnic on the grass; blankets, folding chairs, a hamper of food and drink enough for yourself.  This will not be a potluck; and we will have limited use of the community centre (washrooms only) so please don't bring anything that needs to be kept hot or cold.

Then, stay for "pickup" dancing; we will show you the basics for Scottish Country, English Country and Contra, and will guide you through each dance by calling out the steps.  Most music will be recorded, we will have live music for waltzing.

If it's raining, we have use of those lovely white marquees, so please come, rain or shine.  It's free and it's our way of introducing our club to you.

You don't need a partner; just soft shoes and a sense of humour.  We believe we've discovered a cure for two left feet as well, so bring those along if you have them.

Help the Conservancy map eelgrass - July 17/18

Are you a kayaker interested in helping the environment? If so, why not help the Conservancy and the Vancouver Apneist Freediving Club map important eelgrass habitat around Gallagher Bay on Saturday, July 17th (starting at 12:30pm) and Sunday, July 18th (starting at 10am). We are expecting 6-8 freedivers, but we still need about 4 volunteers with their own kayaks to work with these freedivers.

Even if you're not a kayaker, we could still use your help! We are making dinner for the freedivers at 6:30pm on the 17th, and since many hands make light work, we'd very much appreciate anybody willing to make a dish. Give your new summer salad a try... and we'll provide the good company if you care to join us for dinner.

And don't forget: On July 13th, the Conservancy is conducting a beach spawning survey and we could use an extra set of hands. It's just another good excuse to go to the beach! Meet us at 9 am at Village Bay.

If you are free to help, please call Leanna Boyer at (250) 539-5168 or email ed@conservancyonmayne.com. For more information, visit our website at www.conservancyonmayne.com. If you're interested in learning more about freediving, check out their website: http://www.vancouverapneist.com
